Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) compliance has always been challenging due to complex regulatory language and exposure to risk. However, institutions that do not comply are in jeopardy of losing federal funding. Accessible and user-friendly, FERPA Clear and Simple clarifies the regulations and provides a ready reference for compliance and problem solving. This need-to-have guide offers critical and relevant material (including the 2008 Amendments) from a new perspective to help staff in student affairs, academic departments, and administrative support positions understand and comply with FERPA guidelines.

Thomas E. Young

Thomas Young earned his bachelor’s degree in English, with a minor in music, from Grand Valley State College in 1971 and, after serving two years in the United States Army, earned his master's degree in English–community college teaching from Michigan State University in 1974. In 1980 he received his Ph.D. in English literature from Michigan State University.

Young served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions (chair, dean, and acting vice president) at Tri-State University and Purdue University North Central, Greenville Technical College, and South Arkansas Community College before coming to Georgia Gwinnett College, where he teaches English composition and serves as a faculty administrator overseeing part-time faculty in the humanities. On June 1, 2011, he was appointed interim associate dean.

Young’s Korean-born wife, Soon, and their son, Steve, live in Simpsonville, South Carolina, where Steve is working on his master’s degree in counseling. Their daughter, Stephanie, is an assistant professor of communication at the University of Southern Indiana.

When not teaching composition, linguistics, or literature or dabbling in administration, Young has enjoyed performing and composing music, reading, walking, and even, when he has made the occasional lucky shot, golfing.
