Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) compliance has always been challenging due to complex regulatory language and exposure to risk. However, institutions that do not comply are in jeopardy of losing federal funding. Accessible and user-friendly, FERPA Clear and Simple clarifies the regulations and provides a ready reference for compliance and problem solving. This need-to-have guide offers critical and relevant material (including the 2008 Amendments) from a new perspective to help staff in student affairs, academic departments, and administrative support positions understand and comply with FERPA guidelines.

Darla J. Twale

Darla J. Twale received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in sociology from Geneva College, Duquesne University, and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively, and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from Pitt in 1985. Her research interests include the socialization of faculty, students, and administrators. Recent publications include a book on faculty incivility, and book chapters on her dissertation, bullying, and student athletes. She coauthored a monograph on graduate and professional student socialization and has written more than fifty-five scholarly articles. Twale serves on the editorial boards of several journals and served as editor of the Journal of Research in Education for four years. She was a recent board member of the Eastern Educational Research Association. Formerly on the faculty at Auburn University and the University of Dayton, Twale taught and coordinated the higher education administration/leadership programs. She transitioned to teaching and preparing online graduate courses and currently teaches as an adjunct professor for Pitt. Occasionally, Twale has an opportunity to conduct workshops for faculty and administrators on faculty incivility and bullying in the academic workplace. Now in semi-retirement, Twale has time for cycling, ballroom dancing, gardening, fishing, camping, and, of course, scholarly reading and writing.
