Walter Gmelch


Walter Gmelch is dean of the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. He is one of higher education’s leading researchers in the study of academic leaders—particularly chairs and deans. He earned his MBA from UC–Berkeley and his Ph.D. from UC–Santa Barbara. He is the author of Chairing an Academic Department, Leadership Skills for Department Chairs, The Department Chair as Academic Leader, The Changing Nature of the Academic Dean, Deans’ Balancing Acts, College Deans: Leading from Within, and Seasons of a Dean's Life.
